Karen Rann
Karen's interest in micro-biology developed whilst artist in residence at VARC (Visual Arts in Rural Communities) in nearby Highgreen. This residency gave her access to natural materials plus the possibility of observing microbes forming light-reflective films on Northumbrian bog-pools.
This interest led to the Spirality series of sculptures. The viscosity, slow motility and reflective qualities of some microbes also influenced and partly inspired the working process for the installation Traverser three years later.
