Introduction

The exhibition consists of 4 site specific installations made by 4 artists living and working in the North Tyne Valley. The works are set on four freshwater ponds, dug in the 1980s to encourage biodiversity in this area. Although man-made they now look a part of the environment they occupy, making us reflect on what is natural or artificial in our landscape.

The artists in Flow share an interest in the 'geology' of the place - be it natural or social. Like the ponds' water feeding into each other - yet each remaining separate- there is a strong communication between the four artists' work. Their works talk to each other while showing us the different aspects that make up an environment : the flow of water, the plants, the microbes within, as well as at how humans alter, interrupt and remould water courses and how this affects communities in general.
