Panoramic view of a pond

In the 1980s five ponds, ranging in size from 20-80 m long by 10-20 m wide and 1-2m deep, were created in two fields that were naturally boggy, with the aim of increasing the biodiversity of the area.

They were left to be colonised naturally, by plants, amphibians, mammals and birds. This has been very successful (see pond life page) the majority of seeds and insects being introduced by the wind, birds and animals visiting the ponds.

The area around the ponds was grazed by sheep for approximately 15 years. Over the past 4-5 yrs the fields have only been grazed occasionally, to allow the planting of hedges and trees to create more cover for nesting birds and other wildlife.
