Kielder Water

Kielder Water is one of the largest man-made reservoirs in Europe, with a 27 mile-round shoreline. 42 households had to be evacuated and 1.5 million trees felled before the building of the reservoir commenced in 1974. Following completion of the dam the reservoir took 1.5 years to fill, in good time for the official opening by the Queen in 1982.

Kielder was built to supply water to industries on Teesside and involved a major debate on whether it was the right location for a reservoir. Other sites were considered, but the existing forest and potential recreational opportunities justified the go-ahead.

The debate continues today, as some people believe that it should never have been built because the water wasnÕt needed after all. Others believe it is a great success as it brings lots of visitors to the area and provides many sporting and leisure activities.
